East Coast meets West Coast — that’s the overarching inspiration behind the Spring/Summer 2017 collection. Here, Tory breaks down the major trends from the East Coast side.

Prep on Overdrive
“Our idea of East Coast was taking classic prep shapes and making it cool. We played with proportion and volume and added sport details, like the tennis skirts. I like to call this collection prep on overdrive. Even the pink and green color palette is quintessential prep – in the collection, the pink is brighter in some places and, in others, it’s a soft, muted shade. I especially love the engineered pink and green floral print.”

Hostess Chic
“When I think of East Coast, I think a lot about Newport in the Sixties and the way hostesses dressed. They had these incredible long skirts — on the runway, they were mixed with a bra top. We also did caftans for evening — the shocking pink one, with gold embroideries, was inspired by something my father’s mother used to wear. She would casually throw her hair up, wear a beautiful caftan and — no makeup — was set for the night.”

Girl with a Pearl… Everything
“Pearls were a detailing and embellishment throughout, sprinkled on cable-knit sweaters and cardigans, cascading off brocade mules…. There’s pearl jewelry everywhere, too, but we played with the proportions for a modern take on a ladylike classic.”

Ship Happens
“Regatta stripes, rope-like patterns, fisherman sweaters…. Spring has great sailor motifs. My favorite is the blueprint of a sailing boat that we turned into one of the season’s key prints — you can see it on cotton voile bow blouses and linen burlap pants.”
